ACT I
EXT. THE GREAT CLEARING - DAY
The heart of the jungle. Sunbeams filter through the massive leaves of KAPOK, a towering, ancient tree that serves as the jungle's courthouse. Animals are gathered around a makeshift desk made of a rotting log. SNIP, a high-strung Leaf-Cutter Ant wearing tiny reading glasses, is pounding a twig on the desk like a gavel.
SNIP
(shouting)
Cease and desist! I am issuing a cease and desist to the entire fungal network! You can't just take our Leucocoprinus fungus! My colony spent three million years selectively breeding that strain!
SHUTTLE, a Weaver Bird with a very trendy plumage fade, swoops down and lands on the log.
SHUTTLE
Look, man, you can have your dirt mushrooms. But I'm officially patenting the slip-knot. I saw a couple of you macaques trying to tie vines together yesterday. That’s proprietary weaving tech, bro. Royalties are due.
SPINNER, a massive Golden Orb Spider, repels down from a branch on a single, gleaming thread.
SPINNER
Oh, please. If we're talking IP, anything structural involving tensile strength belongs to me. I own the patent on geometric netting. You birds are infringing just by crossing twigs in a grid!
DIGGER, a grubby Burrowing Rodent (Agouti) pops his head out of a hole in the ground.
DIGGER
Are you kidding me? You guys are fighting over twigs and knots while I hold the rights to subterranean temperature regulation! Every burrow, every tunnel—that's Digger Corp architecture. If you're hiding underground, you owe me rent.
TIMBER, a burly Beaver wearing a harness of river-reeds, waddles into the clearing, chewing on a lawsuit-shaped leaf.
TIMBER
Rent? Buddy, I own the water. Hydrological engineering? Dam construction? That's all Beaver intellectual property. I just filed the paperwork. The river is now a subscription service.
ARROW, an Arowana fish with a sharp attitude, pokes his head out of the nearby stream. He spits a precise jet of water, knocking a bug off a leaf right into his mouth.
ARROW
Subscription water? Good luck enforcing that, flat-tail. I've got a trademark on ballistic water-jet insect retrieval. Nobody shoots bugs off branches but me.
BROODY, a stressed-out Cichlid fish with a mouth full of eggs, swims up beside Arrow.
BROODY
Could you all just keep it down? I'm trying to utilize my proprietary mouth-brooding incubator tech here, and the stress is ruining my pH levels!
KAPOK (V.O.)
(A deep, booming rustle of leaves)
SILENCE.
The animals freeze. Kapok’s vines shift, resembling a stern face.
KAPOK
You squabble over ownership while the sun beats down. Look around you. The gridlock is already starting.
ACT II
EXT. THE JUNGLE STREAM - DAY
The environment is in crisis. The stream is drying up. Timber the Beaver has built a massive, monopolized dam blocking all the water. Arrow the Arowana is flopping in a shallow puddle.
ARROW
(gasping)
Timber! Open the dam! I can't breathe, let alone use my patented bug-shooting tech!
TIMBER
(from atop the dam)
Sorry, Arrow! Unless you can pay the licensing fee in premium hardwood, the tap stays off! It's just business!
Broody the Cichlid is trapped in the same puddle, desperately trying to keep her eggs wet.
BROODY
My eggs! The incubator tech fails if the ambient water drops! Timber, please!
Meanwhile, on the riverbank, Snip the Ant is looking at a withered gray mushroom.
SNIP
No, no, no! My fungus! The humidity is gone! Digger, I need you to aerate the soil so my fungus can breathe!
DIGGER
(poking head out of dry dirt)
Can't do it, Snip! Spinner slapped an injunction on me. Said my tunnel supports infringe on her web designs. I'm legally barred from digging!
SPINNER
(hanging limply from a dry branch)
I had to! Shuttle the Weaver Bird claimed my web anchors violated his knot patents! I can't spin! I'm starving!
SHUTTLE
(fluffing his feathers nervously)
Hey, I'm just protecting my brand! Though... honestly, without Digger turning the soil, the trees aren't growing the right leaves for my nests anyway.
The jungle is browning. The air is stifling.
SNIP
We're dying. We have all these patents, all this exclusive knowledge, and we're literally starving to death.
ARROW
(weakly)
Water... I'd trade every trademark I have... for just one splash of unlicensed, open-source water.
ACT III
EXT. THE GREAT CLEARING - SUNSET
The animals drag themselves back to the base of the Kapok tree. They look defeated, thirsty, and exhausted.
TIMBER
(sighs)
I watched a family of deer turn away from my dam today. They were so thirsty. What good is owning the river if there's no one left to drink from it?
SNIP
My fungus is entirely dead. All that genetic engineering... worthless.
SHUTTLE
I'll drop the knot patent. Spinner, anchor your webs however you want. I just want to see the jungle green again.
SPINNER
And Digger, burrow away. Use the structural designs.
DIGGER
Timber... tear down the dam. Please.
Timber nods slowly. He waddles over to the massive pile of sticks and mud. With a few heavy whacks of his tail, he dislodges the keystone log. The water bursts through! It floods the dry stream beds. Arrow the Arowana leaps into the air, doing a joyful flip before shooting a bug down with a triumphant spit. Broody the Cichlid swims gracefully, her eggs safe and oxygenated. The water soaks the ground. Digger begins frantically tunneling, turning the rich earth. The fresh soil allows Snip’s remaining fungus spores to instantly bloom.
KAPOK (V.O.)
(A warm, resonant rustle)
Do you see it now, my small friends?
The animals look up at the towering tree.
KAPOK
You cannot patent the wind. You cannot copyright the soil. The tragedy of your greed is that you forgot the fundamental truth of this ecosystem.
SNIP
We thought our survival was about hoarding our tricks.
KAPOK
Exactly. But what makes the jungle a living breathing heart of a life bouquet is the fact that there is interdependence between all residents. Every breath you take is a gift from a leaf. Every meal you eat relies on the worms in the dirt. You are not solitary corporations. You are a single, breathing organism.
SHUTTLE
Open-source ecology.
TIMBER
From now on... no more patents. We share the tech. We share the water.
ARROW
(spits a bug into the water for Broody)
Here you go, Broody. On the house.
BROODY
(muffled, smiling around her eggs)
Thanks, Arrow.
The sun sets, painting the vibrant, cooperative, open-source jungle in hues of gold and purple.
